Sore Throat

Symptoms may include 

  • Redness
  • Pain 
  • Painful swallowing 
  • Headache 
  • Fatigue 
  • Swollen lymph nodes 
  • Fever

Causes 

  • Viruses
    • Most common cause 
    • Includes Infectious Mononucleosis
    • Antibiotics don't help 
  • Bacteria 
    • Including Strep throat 
    • Requires antibiotics

Self-Care 

  • Rest 
  • Fluids, stay hydrated, hot or cold drinks, popsicles 
  • Warm salt water gargles every few hours 
  • Over-the-counter medications to target symptoms 
  • Lozenges (Halls, Ricola, Cepacol, etc.)

See Healthcare provider if: 

  • Fever > 101◦ F 
  • Severe pain 
  • Known exposure to strep 
  • Difficulty swallowing 
  • Experiencing stiff neck or rash, seek care immediately 
  • You have concerns or questions
