Flu or Influenza-like Illness

Symptoms may include: 

  • Fever >100.4°  F
  • Chills
  • Significant body/muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Dry cough
  • Headache
  • Occasionally may cause nausea/vomiting 
  • More severe than common cold 
  • Highly contagious, influenza virus is airborne

Self-Care measures 

  • Rest - do not go to class/dining hall/social gatherings if diagnosed with influenza
  • Drink plenty of fluids (8-10 glasses/day)
  • Over-the-counter medication to target symptoms
  • Monitor your temperature 


  • Flu Vaccine 
  • Tamiflu (prescription medication), if you are exposed seek medical attention 
  • Frequent, regular hand washing 
  • Avoid people who are sick

Protect others 

  • Hand washing 
  • Dispose of Tissues 
  • Cover your nose and mouth 
  • Do not go to class, dining hall etc., to limit the spread, until fever gone for 24 hours

Do you need to see a healthcare provider? Yes, see a doctor/nurse if: 

  • suspect flu or are exposed to someone diagnosed with flu 
  • shortness of breath or chest pain
  • history of asthma, diabetes or other chronic illness 
  • experiencing stiff neck 
  • symptoms worsen
  • questions or concerns
