FYE Bridge

The Summer Bridge First Year Experience (FYE) is a unique opportunity to facilitate the transition to Trinity and introduce new Tigers to college-level academic coursework.

This unique FYE option begins two weeks before New Student Orientation (NSO) and is completed before Thanksgiving, giving students an early start in their studies and a reduced load as they finish their other classes after Thanksgiving.
Designed specifically to welcome first-generation and/or underrepresented populations, Summer Bridge FYE provides an early introduction to the available resources to help with the transition to Trinity, both academically and socially.

About the course:

All first year students at Trinity take First-Year Experience (FYE), a six-credit interdisciplinary course that serves as an introduction to college level reading, writing, and critical thinking. The topic/theme of the Summer Bridge FYE is “A Successful Life”, which is one of many FYE topics.  So, if you participate in Summer Bridge FYE, your FYE topic is “A Successful Life.” Here is a brief course description:

First Year Experience: A Successful Life Course Description:

Everyone sets out to succeed, but what that means can be tricky business.  In some ways, the successes of your daily lives are measured quickly–you receive an A on a test, cash a paycheck for hard work, or put a smile on the face of a loved one.  But how are we to measure deep, long-term success? Stars of social media with tens of thousands of followers and corporate CEOs who have jet planes and mansions might be considered successful.  But are they? How about the immigrant who lands on foreign shores to learn a new language, adopt a new culture, and raise a loving family all the while being undocumented? We begin the semester examining the surprising ways important figures have sought to define success, from Ben Franklin to the 20th-Century champions of capitalism to some members of the millennial generation. We then study contemporary examples of struggles to achieve artistic and scientific success.  The semester will culminate in your individual creative exploration of how you might finish your first year at Trinity with success, how you might extend that success along the road to graduation, and, most importantly, how you can forge the path to an ultimately successful life.

Beyond the course:

In addition to class time with FYE faculty, students in the Summer Bridge FYE Program will participate in seminars and workshops to introduce students to college life.  By learning about the expectations and opportunities of college life with others from similar backgrounds and experiences, new Tigers can lay a strong foundation for success and plant roots that will help them thrive.

More about Summer Bridge from previous participants:

FYE Summer Bridge is a 2-week intensive program that is an extension of the Fall semester. It is hard but it is good for adjusting to college and developing writing and speaking skills.

This is a great opportunity to take advantage of. You finish early and get introduced to campus early, which is a great advantage. You also have many resources: TLC staff, your professors, advisors that will all help you succeed.

Bridge is a great chance to get used to campus and warm up for the semester, both socially and academically. You also get to learn about all kinds of resources that you have access to during the semester.

You make friends before school starts, which is cool.
