Research Opportunities

145 students and 60 faculty mentors participated in the 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Program. Moreover, 93% of academic departments were represented in the summer program. View the list below for 2020 summer research opportunities. Most applications are due in mid-February and students are informed of their application status in early March. 

On-campus Opportunities

Biology Department (BSURF)

  • Eligibility: Biology majors pursuing summer research with Biology faculty
  • Requirements: 10 weeks of full-time participation and presentation of results at the end of summer symposium
  • Number available: 3+
  • Award: up to $4,000

Chemistry Department Research Opportunities

  • Eligibility: Students who have completed CHEM 1318 (or have AP credit) and will complete CHEM 2319 by May 2020.
  • Requirements: 10 weeks of full time participation and presentation of results at the end of summer symposium
  • Number available: approximately 30
  • Stipend: approximately $4,000

Computer Science Department (HEP Student Summer Research Fellowship)

  • Eligibility: Computer Science majors pursuing summer research with CS faculty
  • Requirements: 10 weeks of full time participation and presentation of results at the end of summer symposium

Hixon Environmental Studies (includes fieldwork)

  • Eligibility: Faculty-student teams from ANY department. Students must be graduating in December 2021 or later.
  • Requirements: Applications will only be accepted from faculty-student teams. Individuals may not appear in more than one application.
  • Number available: 3
  • Stipend: up to $4,500.

Integrated Research in Biomathematics

  • Eligibility: U.S. citizens
  • Requirements: Students should have a background in biology and mathematics. 8 weeks of full time participation and presentation of results at the end of summer symposium.
  • Number available: 10-12
  • Stipend: $4,000

Mach Research Fellowships

Mach fellowships provide funding to rising seniors for use in research or scholarly activity during their senior year. One Mach Fellow nomination is permitted per department. Mach fellowships don’t have to be used during the summer.

  • Number available: 5 or more
  • Award Amount: between $1,000 and $2,500 for supplies or travel (not a stipend)

McNair Scholars Program

  • Eligibility: Only students already participating in the McNair Scholars Program may apply for summer research support.
  • Requirements: Participation in the McNair Scholars Program goes far beyond summer research. Scholars are engaged in activities throughout the year.

Mellon Initiative Research Fellowship

  • Eligibility: Faculty-student teams working on projects in the arts and humanities. Students must be graduating in December 2020 or later.
  • Requirements: Applications will only be accepted from faculty-student teams. Individuals may not appear in more than one application.
  • Number available: 15-20
  • Stipend: up to $4,200
  • Additional Resources: $1,300 per student for travel and/or supplies. Faculty mentors will receive stipend of $2,000.

Murchison Research Fellowships

  • Eligibility: Faculty-student teams from ANY department. Students must be graduating in December 2020 or later.
  • Requirements: Applications will only be accepted from faculty-student teams. Individuals may not appear in more than one application (i.e., a student can only submit one application to Murchison); however, students are encouraged to submit applications to more than one program.
  • Number available: 20
  • Stipend: up to $4,000
  • Additional Resources: Total budget of $6,000, including student stipend (max $4,000), faculty stipend ($1,000), supplies, travel, etc.
