Saturday Morning Experience

Saturday Morning Experience is an enrichment program for creative young people in grades one to eight, that meets from September through April. Students engage in exciting and enriching lessons that help deepen their understanding and broaden their learning experience. The program is coordinated by Trinity graduate students in education and sessions are taught by Trinity undergraduates from a variety of majors.

Experience and Enrichment

Saturday Morning Experience is designed to enhance students' intellectual and social development. Children benefit from:

  • Working in small groups while also receiving individualized attention from their mentors
  • The programs reflect the interests of the mentors and children involved, providing freedom to discover exciting new topics under the umbrella of sustainability
  • The experience also exposes children to a university setting through interactions with the Trinity campus, including visits to Trinity's Coates Library, the use of progressive classroom technology, exposure to faculty expertise, and many other valuable resources.

Students are selected to participate in Saturday Morning Experience on the basis of a simple application process.

Coordinator Role

SME is coordinated by MAT interns, who receive (1) a significant graduate scholarship for the MAT program and (2) a valuable leadership and educational experience coordinating an educational program and working with college students (the small group mentores), elementary and middles school children, parents and the university community.

Coordinators are responsible for coordinating the year-long program (August-May). That includes recruiting and hiring undergraduate students to serve as mentors, leading mentor training, reviewing program lesson plans written by the mentors and buying supplies, recruiting and enrolling local school students, supervising the Saturday program (approximately 4-5 sessions per semester), coordinating a day-long field trip outside of San Antonio, planning a closing ceremony, and communicating with parents and families, Trinity offices and community members. Coordinators must be enrolled in the MAT program in order to serve in this role.

Mentor Role

Mentors are energetic undergraduate students who have a passion for education, science, and/or working with children. They come from a range of majors across so many creative ways. Mentors gain experience developing engaging lessons and working with children, as well as earn income and future scholarships if they decide to pursue the MAT program.

Program Details

Saturday Morning Experience (SME) sessions are held on Saturdays usually beginning in September and ending in April. Tuition is $200 for the 1st child and $185 for siblings, and all funds are applied toward the operating costs of the program. We want to allow all interested children the opportunity to participate, so a limited number of scholarships may be awarded to those who require financial assistance.

We have an environmental science curriculum called Growin Up WILD that we think provides a great curricular framework for the program and students' learning, helps promote science education for K-12 and college students, and offers unique certification for Trinity students as we train and certify the coordinators and mentors.
