McMullen is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication. She teaches courses on visual communication, the interpretation and analysis of visual texts, and graphic design. Before returning to school for her M.S. and Ph.D., she worked as a graphic designer in the areas of advertising and publication design.

McMullen’s research interests focus broadly on the effects of culture on visual communication, with a particular interest in the visual images of contemporary American tourism. Her recent research has appeared in Cultural Studies/Critical Methodologies and The International Journal of Visual Design.
