This year, Trinity University’s Health Care Administration Department celebrated its 50th year of teaching excellence in health care management. In honor of the momentous anniversary, and the now over 1600 graduates, the HCAD Alumni Association Board hosted a black tie gala in the San Antonio Country Club ballroom on October 8. Gala chair, Ashley Hixon ’00, FACHE and her committee of Dorothy Benavidez ‘89, Patrick Halinski ’11 and John Hyde, Ph.D., ‘81, FACHE had the South Texas Jazz Trio on hand to welcome guests for passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails before being seated for an elegant, San Antonio-inspired meal.
The evening’s program, led by Alumni Association President, Jim Bohnsack B.S.’97, M.S.-HCAD ’99, began with a greeting from HCAD Department Chair, Ed Schumacher. Then, Trinity University President Danny Anderson, as well as Board of Trustees Chairman and double graduate, Doug D. Hawthorne B.S.’69, M.S.-HCAD ’72 offered their remarks to the crowd. The evening honored all the previous Dean Duce Award winners with a video slideshow tribute and also awarded the Inaugural Momentum Award to James B. Brown ‘99. Of course, the evening would not have been complete without a few words of invocation and benediction from the one and only, Paul Golliher.
Over 260 guests attended and, thanks to the generosity of several donors, (Duce winner Robert L. Walker ’72, FACHE, USPI, CRAssociates, OU Medical System and Trinity University Board of Trustees member Herb Stumberg ’81 as well as a few other companies that donated their extra seats) every current First Year, Second Year and Executive Program student and faculty/staff member that wanted to attend was allowed to free of charge. In addition, 17 former Duce Award winners were present that night to help celebrate.
By the end of the night, over $200,000 was raised in table purchases, donations and sponsorships. Jon Foster ’86 led a philanthropic challenge to former Duce Award winners with 15 participating in a very significant manner. This event was a huge success, netting over $170,000 to fund scholarships, the Department's Center for Leadership and the students’ participation in ACHE Congress in Chicago.
