One of my favorite things about teaching at Trinity is that every year we get two new cohorts of students (On Campus and Executive) with unique personalities, interests, strengths and weaknesses to work with. I get to start from scratch every year to build new relationships, and challenge the students and myself to learn new things and achieve the goals ahead of us. This year is no exception as we have two great new classes, and I am excited to see where they all end up. As you see from the Class President's report, the First Year On Campus class is full of enthusiasm and is jumping head first into the program and the health care field. Likewise we had a great time with our Executive students when they were on campus in August. This included a visit to University Health System's new tower, visits from a local CEO and physician, as well as their introduction to Pecha Kucha talks (look it up).
The Second Year students are finishing up their time on campus and are excited to begin their residencies. The students were Guinea pigs for two new classes this semester. The first was a course in performance improvement. At the end of the semester (assuming they pass the exam) they will have their yellow belt certification in Lean Six Sigma. The second new class is titled "Clinical Decision Making." This is a course taught by a physician aimed at exposing the students to the growing intersection of health management and clinical knowledge. This case-based course introduces students to the nature of clinical knowledge. This case-based course introduces students to the nature of clinical process and decision making in clinical care. The course provides a context for understanding the relationship between and among clinicians in the rendering of care to patients. To my knowledge, we are the only program offering a class like this. Both of these courses have been very popular among the students - although we have heard some grumbling since it means Second Year students no longer have their Fridays free!
Other new additions that I want to point out to you are two new blogs that Patrick Shay B.A.'03, M.S. - HCAD '05 (our newest faculty member) has started. The first (tuhcad.blogspot.com) is designed to give a snapshot of what is happening with students, faculty, alumni and friends of the department. In the most recent entries you can read about our recent women's forum, a resident's reflection on his progress since starting the program, class projects, and the success of the kickball team. The second (http://trinityhealthcaredigest.blogspot.com/) is designed to be a bridge between academic research and the field of practice. Recent posts summarize and interpret leading research on physician engagement, patient satisfaction, and the accountability of ACOs. Check them out. I think you will find them interesting - and we would love to have our alumni contribute to these blogs.
Other news that I am excited to report to you is that we had another successful trip to the National Association of Health Service Executives (NAHSE) Case Competition. This past October, three Second Year students (Megan Powe, Tyson Traveller and Patra Katsigiannis) traveled with me to Detroit for the competition. Out of 24 teams from around the country our team made it all the way to the finals and placed 4th in the competition. This was a great learning experience for the students and an awesome way for us to demonstrate what students from Trinity are capable of. This trip was made possible through the generous gifts of our alumni, so please know that your contributions to the program are being put to productive uses.
I have already mentioned the great group of students in our Executive program. As a reminder, the Executive program is a two year program designed for individuals working full time in health care. The First Year class includes two physicians, two CFOs, a director of business development, as well as individuals in payer relations, behavioral health, and pediatrics. This diverse set of backgrounds creates a rich learning environment that combines the best of academics with real world applications. If you have identified an individual in your organization who might benefit from this type of experience, please put them in contact with me or Sharon Hubenak, our Director of Recruitment and Residencies.
